ACC Art Books is one of the world's leading publishers and distributors of books on the arts and visual culture. Our own publications represent more than 50 years of innovation, including collaborations with some of the world's foremost artists, fashion designers, architects and photographers. We began in 1966 by developing essential reference works on the decorative arts, many of which remain in print as the standard texts in their fields.
We publish books on a wide range of topics, including art, architecture, design, fashion, lifestyle, travel, pop culture, and more. Our bestselling titles include the "111 Places" travel guide series, Lannoo's "150 Series," and works on music, photography, interior design, art, fashion and textiles, jewelry, cars and watches, luxury travel, wine, food, and gardens and wildlife.
Thirty years after his death, the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat continues to attract maximum attention. His artistic practice and distinctive aesthetic have made him a focus for art historians, and his works have brought record-breaking prices at both the art trade and auctions.
Basquiat's practice lies at the intersection of three major axes: the subjective expression of the artist, a Pop sensibility, and a connection with music and sound. This exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the first to consecrate virtually all its galleries to a single artist, showcases an ensemble of more than 120 works by Basquiat, many of which have never been displayed before.
Basquiat absorbed everything, mixing the lessons of the street with a repertoire of images, heroes, and symbols from a wide range of cultures. His radical approach has been discussed in the context of the work of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, and Cy Twombly. The exhibition explores themes such as "Flesh and Spirit," "Modernity, Modernism," "The Heads of Jean-Michel Basquiat," and "Jean-Michel Basquiat: Riding With Death."
Through this retrospective, the Fondation Louis Vuitton aims to contribute to the continual search for dialogue between current creation and striking works from the modern period. The thirtieth anniversary of Basquiat's death (1988–2018) provides a fitting time to honor his enduring legacy and the lasting impact of his groundbreaking artistic practice.
